A book of wildlife photos by Sha Kok Mei resident Robert I. Ferguson has sold about 1600 copies in just over three months, he told HONG KONG BUZZ. “Wild Creatures in Hong Kong” has 30 pages of stunning photos, all taken by Robert himself. Biophiles are rivetted, especially by the covershot of a collared scops owl.

Robert I. Ferguson

Robert is an Englishman who grew up in Switzerland and now lives near Sai Kung town with his wife. Their two grown children are overseas. Robert retired in 2018 as a regional sales and marketing director for Reuters and formerly he was with The Economist. As a youth in Switzerland, he fell in love with skiing, but had an accident recently that put him in a wheel chair for three months. Nerves in his back were crushed. “Now I’m 88% recovered,” he said.

The first “Wild Creatures in Hong Kong” is labelled Volume 1. Robert said the next volume will be published by the beginning of next year. It will be similar in style with photos of different animals. He is also working on a field guide to snakes. “I love snakes” (see www.hongkongsnakeid.com) and produces a daily blog with tips on how to view animals — stay still for lengthy periods — and where to see them such as Sai Kung Country Park, Tai Po Kau forest and Mai Po Marshes. In the blog he also gives photography tips and interesting facts about animals.

The book sells for $80 at Kidnapped, The Hive and soon the Bookazine chain. It is a magnet for nature lovers and Kidnapped has it placed at Number One sales spot.
