A male inmate at Fo Tau Fan Chau drug rehabilitation centre in Sai Kung died of injuries after falling off a cliff

Around 8:00 am this morning (31/3), police received a report that a man in his 50s was suspected of falling off a cliff at Fo Tau Fung Chau (also known as Town Island or Dawn Island) in Sai Kung. The victim suffered a head injury and fell into coma, and was later confirmed to be dead. Several police officers boarded a police cruiser at the Marine Police base in Sai Kung and went to the scene to investigate the incident.

It is understood that the deceased, 59 years old was an inmate at the Dawn Island Gospel Addiction Treatment Centre on the island. Last night, the staff of the rehabilitation centre checked the deceased’s bedroom and found nothing unusual. It was not until 6:00 am this morning that they found the deceased was not in the bedroom but later found him lying at the bottom of the cliff. They immediately called the police for help. Emergency services confirmed that he was dead at the scene, and the case was classified as “someone accidentally injured”; the investigation continues. It is reported that the deceased took the initiative to participate in hospital activities on weekdays, but rarely communicated and had no grudges with others. It is initially believed that the cause of death is not suspicious.

This Centre was first established in Long Ke Wan, Sai Kung, in April 1968, providing a boarding faith-driven treatment and rehabilitation services to male drug abusers. With approval from the Hong Kong Government in 1976, the Centre was moved to Fo Tau Fan Chau, Sai Kung, and has continued to operate under the name “Dawn Island Gospel Addiction Treatment Centre” to this day. In July 2006, a South-Asian Ethnic Zone was officially set up on the Island, offering addiction treatment to South-Asian male students. With this, there are now three student groups on the island, namely, the Adult Group (aged 23 and above), the Youth Group (aged 22 and below), and the South-Asian Ethnic Group (for non-Chinese).
