Speedboat captain who jumped into the sea to save wakeboarder confirmed dead after being hit by propeller

A tragedy occurred yesterday evening (17/7) when a speedboat captain jumped into the water to rescue a wakeboarder in difficulties and was hit, and killed by the boat propeller. The accident took place around 50m off Tai Mong Tsai, Sai Kung, a well known water skiing area.

At about 6:00 pm, police received a report that a speedboat captain had fallen into the sea on about 50 metres offshore from Tai Mong Tsai. Police and fire services rushed to the scene and found three female passengers on the speedboat safe and sound, but the captain was missing, so they launched a search. The Government Flying Service also dispatched helicopters to assist. About an hour later, rescuers finally found the missing man, but it was confirmed that he was dead.

Local media report that the 31-year-old deceased was employed by the boat company, and had been driving the boat to take three women out to sea to wakeboard. After investigation, police believe that one of the female passengers got into difficulties while wakeboarding and the captain was hit by the propeller of the boat when he jumped into the sea to save her. He suffered injuries to his chest and abdomen.

The three women were taken to Sai Kung Marine Police base for check-up, but all were found to be in good health. An autopsy will take place to determine the cause of death.
