73-year-old taxi driver attacked near High Island Reservoir; taxi, phone and cash stolen

Last night (01/10) a 73-year-old urban taxi driver picked up a fare in Tai Kok Tsui at 8:00 pm and was asked to drive to the Chong Hing Water Sports Centre at High Island Reservoir, Sai Kung When the taxi reached the destination near the West Dam, the passenger tried to strangle the driver with a mobile phone charging cable.

The passenger told the driver, “I don’t want to kill you. I just want you to give me your money”. He took the driver’s two mobile phones, watches, about $1,250 in cash, as well as other belongings worth about $6,000. He then stole the taxi and drove off leaving the taxi driver alone at the remote spot.

The driver, who could not call the police as he had lost his phone, had to walk for thirty minutes back towards Sai Kung. Two hikers found him disoriented and called for help immediately. The driver had suffered multiple minor injuries to his neck and body, and paramedics sent him to hospital for treatment. 

The Wong Tai Sin Police District Criminal Investigation Team is following up the incident. The driver had been driving taxis for nearly 40 years and this was the first time he had been robbed.
