UPDATE: The victim’s body was found off the coast of Hoi Ha Wan, Sai Kung at 11:00 am today (4/10). The cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
Hoi Ha has had more than its fair share of visitors during the lockdown period. The numbers arriving in the village still cause many problems for residents, especially at weekend and public holidays. The lack of social distancing and the non-wearing of masks, as well as over-burdened toilet facilities, mean that even the AFCD warden/safety services are overwhelmed, as are the usual emergency service response teams.
Around 12:00 noon yesterday (2/10), police received a report from his girlfriend that a 33-year-old man was snorkelling in the Marine Park but had gone missing, and she suspected that he had drowned. Responders from the police, firefighting, and marine departments, as well as the Government Flying Service sped to the scene for search and rescue. By 10:00 pm they still had not located the missing person. The search operation continued today, but there has been no news as of publication.
Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is located at the northern end of the Sai Kung Peninsula and on the south bank of the Tolo Harbour. It has one of the highest concentrations of marine life and corals in the South China Sea and attracts a large number of snorkelers all year round.
