Coca-Cola collaborates with organisations to host plastic bottle recycling programme

Coca-Cola’s philanthropic arm The Coca-Cola Foundation is collaborating with local NGO The World Green Organisation, Hong Kong’s first food-grade ready plastics recycling facility New Life Plastics, and Pinocchio Communications to launch a plastic recycling programme in Hong Kong.

The “Recycle Together – Clean PET Bottle Reward Programme” recently conducted a poll to invite the public to vote for their favourite recycling districts in Hong Kong. Taking the votes into account, the programme will host about 100 recycling events across eight districts, namely Kwai Tsing, Kwun Tong, New Territories North, Sai Kung, Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Tuen Mun and Yau Tsim Mong, in the upcoming months with the support of the programme’s venue partner People’s Place.

Coca-Cola will also introduce a recycling station which will tour to every recycling event.

Tim Warwick, Hong Kong general manager of Coca-Cola China said at the launch, “Coca-Cola remains fully committed to our global vision of a World Without Waste. We aim to help collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one we sell by 2030. We also believe that shared responsibility and partnership are key to build a well-established recycling infrastructure in Hong Kong.”

William Yu, CEO of World Green Organisation, added, “We are very grateful to see the active participation from last year’s ‘Recycle Together – Clean PET Bottle Reward Programme’ to the recent public poll. It has been a challenging year for both the recycling industry and the wider community as a whole. With the continuous support from The Coca-Cola Foundation, we are pleased to continue the programme to promote clean recycling in Hong Kong.”

All plastic bottles collected from the events will be sent to New Life Plastics’ plant at the EcoPark in Tuen Mun, where all classified PET 1 (one of the most commonly used plastics in consumer products, and is found in most water and pop bottles) and HDPE 2 (High-density polyethylene, the stiff plastic used to make milk jugs, detergent bottles and toys) plastic waste will be turned into food-grade ready rPET flakes and high grade rHDPE granules.

New Life Plastics’ facility is capable of removing bottle labels and caps, facilitating a more convenient way for the public to recycle by just emptying and rinsing the bottle.

Nigel Mattravers, representative of New Life Plastics, commented, “We understand that trust is crucial to encourage the public to recycle. With this in mind, we aim to work closely with stakeholders from different sectors to build a well-established recycling infrastructure and ensure the plastic bottles collected are handled properly.”
