One dead and one missing in drowning incident in Ham Tin Bay – updated

Ham Tin Bay, Sai Kung

UPDATE: Rescuers continued to search the area around the site for nearly two days. At about 2:00 pm yesterday (20/7), the body of the missing man was finally found. The cause of death is to be determined after an autopsy.

Two men were swimming in Ham Tin Bay, Sai Kung yesterday afternoon (18/7) when their friends on the beach heard cries for help around 3:00 pm. They called the emergency services who rescued a 21-year-old man. He was in a coma and was taken to the Eastern Hospital by helicopter where he was certified dead on arrival.

The Observatory had issued a special weather warning at 1:00 pm yesterday stating that high winds and rough seas would occur in coastal waters. High waves were observed at Ham Tin around the time of the incident and it is assumed that the two men got into difficulties while swimming.

Fire Services, Marine Police boats and Government Flying Service helicopters later searched for the other man near Ham Tin Bay, but at this moment he is still listed as missing.
