Man struck by lightning in Clear Water Bay dies

Green Egg Island, Sai Kung

This afternoon (16/9), during a thunderstorm that inflicted 1955 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within one hour in the Tsung Kwan O/Sai Kung area, a 45-year-old man was struck by one of the lightning bolts after being stranded because of the bad weather.

The Observatory issued a thunderstorm warning today and heavy rain and hail fell in Tseung Kwan O and the east New Territories.  Just before 2:00 pm, police received a report that a man was struck by lightning in the waters off Green Egg Island in Clear Water Bay. The man was unconscious when he was rescued by the police launch and was then rushed to the hospital by helicopter, but was dead on arrival.

Social media reports that he and his wife went canoeing at Sheung Sze Bay in Sai Kung around 10:00 am, but that the weather deteriorated very quickly. The two came ashore at Green Egg Island to await rescue. The man thought that a passing boat was there to rescue them and he swam to the boat but was struck by lightning on the way.

Also, at 2:46 pm, several women were kayaking around Green Egg Island. They felt scared owing to the high winds, swift waves, thunder and lightning, so they called the police for assistance. They were rescued by the Marine Police.
