The third Concert for the Animals this Friday, 8 October, really kicks off at 6:30 pm with the Sai Kung Mini-Singers, kids with their faces painted as puppies and kittens singing four songs. Then the Big Bands play, James and the Potato Heads, Hudson Hornet and Jimmy2Times, all Sai Kung talent.
Officially this show is known as the Hong Kong Buzz Concert for the Animals hosted by Tikitiki Bowling Bar. It is the biggest local event since the pandemic skittled all of us early in 2020.
First there will be a show for the kiddies starting at 4:00 pm and running to 7:00 pm. Two clowns will be performing for the children, one in full clown daft and one as a combo juggler-clown. They’ll do juggling, balloon twisting, pose for photos with the kids and all kinds of weird, wacko clown stuff.
Sai Kung Mini-Singers
At 6:30 pm the MINI-SINGERS from the Arts Factory will assemble looking cute in their dog and cat face paint. Nine children will dance and sing “Puppy Love”, “River Deep Mountain High”, “Memories” and “Don’t Stop Believing”.
At 7:00 pm the adults’ show blasts off while the Tikitiki staff lay out the vegetarian buffet. Entertainment guru Jim Lewis has arranged three of Sai Kung’s best bands to rattle the rafters for your enjoyment this Friday. They are:
James Hall
- JAMES AND THE POTATO HEADS only a month old, was formed to bring jazz culture to Sai Kung. Talent: James Hall on trumpet, Noah Nicholson piano, Sarah Nicholson, upright bass, Jason Curran drums, Jim Lewis saxophone, Lewis Armstrong clarinet, Arizton Pamploma guitar. Three are heads of music at international schools. The Potato Heads perform from 7:00 pm.
Hudson Hornet
- HUDSON HORNET pump out rock’n’roll classics from the 50s and 60s. A Sai Kung trio, they are Bryan Coulton guitar, Joe Travers bass, Paul Grace drums. This bunch has been seen at The Wanch, the Big Picnic, Hemingways and Rugby 7s. Hornets start buzzing at 8:00 pm.
Jimmy2Times and The Collective
- JIMMY2TIMES AND THE COLLECTIVE was formed in 2007 as a musical outlet for the teachers of Shatin College. Now the band is comprised of Mike Williams vocal, Joe Travers bass, Bryan Coulton guitar, John Edwards drums and Jim Lewis saxophone and keyboard. They have performed extensively around Hong Kong at Wanch, Beertopia, KITEC, Flying Pan, Momentai and the Aftermath. Watch for the Collective from 9:15 pm.
Mid-way through the adults’ show the musicians will take a break for a well-earned drink and the LUCKY DRAW will be on. Local personality Rob Archibold will compere this event arranged by Catherine Lumsden of Catherine’s Puppies.
The Concert for the Animals is a fund-raiser for Sai Kung dog and cat charities. Beneficiaries will be Hong Kong Cats, Sai Kung Lost Found Injured Animals and Catherine’s Puppies. Tickets are $250 for adults and $150 for kids, entitling you to two standard drinks and all you can eat from the vegetarian buffet. Tickets can be bought at the door on the night.
The ticket money goes 60 per cent to the dog and cat charities and 40 per cent to the Tikitiki Bowling Bar for its costs.
The biggest sponsor of this event, created by Hong Kong Buzz four years ago, is Tikitiki Bowling Bar. Pets Central, the chain of vet clinics and hospitals, is the next biggest sponsor, followed by Homevet, the vet that comes to you.
