Early this morning (19/3) Marine Police started a search for missing person(s) when they discovered an empty yacht off Wong Yi Chau near Kau Sai Chau, Sai Kung. Although the yacht was empty there was a key inserted in the control panel. After a preliminary investigation, police suspected that the owner had fallen into the sea and disappeared.
Police at one point requested the Government Flying Service to send a helicopter to assist, but the helicopter was ultimately unable to be dispatched due to poor visibility in the area. Fire and marine police searched for some hours, but could not determined whether anyone had fallen into the sea and disappeared or whether someone had abandoned the yacht.
After some more searching, the police found nothing. After further investigation, it was believed that no one had fallen into the sea and disappeared. It was a false alarm.
According to data from the Observatory, Hong Kong was affected by heavy fog, and the visibility in the harbour dropped to below 500 metres; the visibility of Waglan Island dropped to below 100 metres. The Observatory remind sailors that the visibility at the sea surface is very low, and boaters should navigate carefully.
