A number of households in the Clear Water Bay area of Sai Kung have recently been burgled, or attempts made, two within the past week. The police investigation into the incidents found that the thieves had been hiding on the edge of the mountain outside the target building, and then smashed the windows in the early morning to break into the house. In response, Tseung Kwan O police began a large-scale land and air anti-theft operation over the past few days. They were assisted by helicopters from the Government Flying Service.

They were aided by GFS helicopter

Inspector Chan Chin-heng, the head of the Tseung Kwan O Police District Task Force, said on Wednesday (18/5) that there have been burglaries in two village houses in the Clear Water Bay area within the past week. The thieves first hid in the woods or grass on the side of the mountain, and did not move until late at night/early morning. After analysis, the police decided to start a large-scale night-time anti-burglary operation over the night of Wednesday and Thursday. The police dispatched officers from various departments including the Tseung Kwan O Police District Uniformed Patrol, Special Task Force, East Kowloon District Stormtroopers and East Kowloon Tactical Forces to search for the burglars.

Road blocks were set up in the area

During the operation, police officers armed with flashlights dispatched multiple police dog teams to assist in the search, and erected barricades on major roads in the area to intercept suspicious vehicles. Owing to the hills and woods in the area, a helicopter of the GFS circled in the air and turned on spotlights to assist the police on the ground.

Police went house to house offering free anti-theft devices

In addition to searching for suspicious persons, the police also distributed leaflets to residents of village houses in the area, suggesting that villagers install anti-theft devices on their windows. It is reported that some villagers have installed anti-theft devices, and when the windows were pried open, the anti-theft devices rang loudly, successfully deterring the thieves.
