Catherine’s Puppies opens adoption centre in Sai Kung town

Some exciting news this weekend as popular Sai Kung animal welfare charity, Catherine’s Puppies, opens an adoption centre in the heart of town.

The new centre is next door to Pets Central vets and a few metres from The Picture House.  Catherine Lumsden, who runs the charity, says it’s something she hadn’t really ever planned to do, but the opportunity to take the space presented itself, and having a centre to meet the growing numbers of people who come to CP events wherever they’re hosted, it just makes sense.

“It’s a nice, welcoming space where people can come to meet puppies and dogs with a view to adopt or foster, or just come for some puppy cuddle therapy which is magical.  We have people coming from all over HK to meet puppies and I think (hope) that this centre will benefit the Sai Kung community too, those who are still recovering from the covid slump in business, especially the restaurants.

As well as donor support with the rental making this even possible, in order to get the place ready in just two weeks I’ve had a lot of support from some really amazing people, in particular John Wilkinson and his team from RenovateHK.  They’ve done an incredible job with the renovations and being a dog owner himself, John has done all this for a huge discount, not charging anything for the time he’s put in himself.  The decor will be done on a shoe string budget, basic but bright and cheerful.  Having local artist Namiko doing lovely paintings of dogs (And offering CP 80% of any pet portrait commissions she gets from people seeing her work) is fantastic.  My mum is an artist and I’ll also have some of her paintings up too.  There’s still a lot to do in a very short time but we’ll get there…

We’re open on Saturday 28 September for our first official adoption event 12:00 – 4:00 pm.  Then at 5:00 pm, to celebrate having the new place, The Picture House is donating 12 bottles of Prosecco for friends and volunteers to toast what we hope will be a huge success, and success to us just means more dogs in homes, that’s what it’s all about, it’s why I continue with this exhausting and relentless madness.”

The centre will be all things dogs, with adoption packs from Buddy Bites, pet supplies from Happy Paws (Jennifer), a special deal for a health check from Pets Central Sai Kung with funds donated to CP, and much more.  “I’m still thinking of ideas and ways to make adopting or fostering a CP puppy an all round wonderful experience” says Catherine.  “We’ll also be able to do a lot more education wise with children of all ages, our young volunteers can come and help with adoption days.  It’s really such a fantastic location and I don’t think it will hurt having a pub a few meters away, for parents to enjoy a drink and a meal while the kids do something meaningful for a few hours.”

Keep an eye on Catherine’s Puppies social media for regular updates about when the centre is open, and pop in this weekend to meet some of the gorgeous and puppies she has needing a home.

For adoption enquiries and general info about how to help and be involved in the work CP does, please contact Catherine – 67997530.

If you’d like to become a regular foster for the charity, caring for dogs between weekly events held at the new location, please contact foster coordinator Sonja – 97580125.

⭐️ Catherine is still happy to bring puppies to other locations for adoption events.  The pups will be joining the fitness folks at Gavin Gleeson, Coach & Cook Fitness Gym opening day, in Clear Water Bay on 12 October.
