80-year-old man killed in truck accident on Hiram’s Highway

Early this morning (28/7) an 80-year-old man was killed when knocked down by a truck while crossing Hiram’s Highway at the junction with Tai Chung Hau Road, Sai Kung.

Around 6:00 am a goods vehicle was travelling along Hiram’s Highway towards Sai Kung was approaching the junction with Tai Chung Hau Road when it hit an 80-year-old man. The victim was caught under the truck and dragged for more than 10 metres before it stopped. According to the dashcam footage, the truck involved hit the victim when it approached the safety island on which he was standing.

Fire and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene but found that the rescue was difficult; the fire scene supervisor immediately asked the Hospital Authority to dispatch medical assistance. It took about 30 minutes for the victim to be extracted from under the truck, by which time he had fallen into a coma and was rushed to Tseung Kwan O Hospital by ambulance. Sadly the victim was confirmed dead at about 7:00 am.

The front windshield of the truck that caused the accident burst, leaving a large pool of blood stains in front of the truck near the bottom of the vehicle. Police took away shoes and bags with shopping believed to belong to the deceased and are investigating the circumstances and causes of the accident. 

Traffic was affected by the accident for about an hour.
