Driver of fire brigade truck that killed cyclist in Pak Sha Wan in 2020 jailed for four weeks

A fatal accident occurred in Pak Sha Wan on 6 December 2020 when a fire truck went out of control on Hirams’ Highway and killed a Columbian cyclist.

The fire brigade officer was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in June 2021. He denied the charge and was found not guilty of the crime after trial and was found guilty of careless driving. The magistrate originally sentenced him to four weeks in prison.

The defence immediately applied for a review of the sentence and pointed out that the defendant was currently waiting for a special quota for public housing for civil servants and would lose his eligibility if he was sentenced to prison. When handling the case at the Kwun Tong Court on 27 May, the magistrate stated that losing a place on the waiting list was not a sufficient reason to avoid jail, and emphasised that the court has the responsibility to deter irresponsible drivers, so he rejected the defence’s review application, the original sentence was upheld and the defendant was required to spend four weeks in jail.
