Yesterday (23/7) was the “Great Heat” day, the 12th of the 24 solar terms in the traditional Chinese almanac, indicating the period of scorching peak heat in the year. Temperatures in different parts of the city logged record-breaking levels at 35oC or above.

In the first accident a 52-year-old man was hiking at Sharp Peak, Sai Kung with two friends. Their hike started at Pak Tam Au at 7:00 am, and the victim felt unwell as they were about to reach the mountain top. He passed out when taking a break and his friends immediately reported to the police around 1:20 pm. He was then rushed to Eastern Hospital by the Government Flying Service but was pronounced dead at 2:58 pm.

The cause of death is to be determined after an autopsy. Police are investigating the case. It is reported in local media that the deceased worked as an accountant and had had a mild stroke seven years ago. He also suffered from high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The second accident occurred around 3:00 pm when a 22-year-old man drowned while snorkelling off Sharp Island, Sai Kung.

Police received a report that four men and two women were hiking on the Sharp Island, Sai Kung. They split into groups and explored separately. However, when they reunited, they found one of the men missing and his personal belongings on the shore. Firefighters and the Government Flying Service helicopter were dispatched and conducted a sea, land and air search. The man was found in the sea 10 metres offshore at Hap Mun Bay.

He was unconscious and was taken to the Marine Police Base in Sai Kung. He was transferred by ambulance to Tseung Kwan O Hospital, but was later confirmed dead. After preliminary investigation, the police believed that the victim was trying to snorkel at the site and accidentally drowned.
