A 72-year-old man was struck by lightning while playing golf at Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, Sai Kung yesterday (11/8) lunchtime.

Golf course staff reported to the police that they suspected a 72-year-old man had been struck by lightning; he had vomited blood and fainted. The Government Flying Service dispatched a helicopter to the scene and rescued the man. He was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital for treatment.

After investigation by the police, they also confirmed that they believed that the man had been struck by lightning while playing golf. He suffered a nosebleed and a black mark on his left hand. He was conscious when he was sent to the hospital.

There are three courses on the island

Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course later confirmed that a golfer was injured by lightning at about noon and was taken to hospital by the Government Flying Service for treatment. The management of the golf course expressed condolences to the injured player.

The weather in Hong Kong has been affected by tropical depression Mulan recently, and there have been squally thunderstorms. The Observatory issued a thunderstorm warning at 10:15 am yesterday morning and it was in effect until 6:00 pm.

Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course is the only public golf course in Hong Kong. It has been operated by the Jockey Club on a non-profit and self-financing basis since 1995. There are three golf courses – the East Course, the North Course and the South Course, with an area of ​​250 hectares. Players need to take the ferry to Kau Sai Chau from the centre of Sai Kung to the dedicated pier on the island.
