Two fatal accidents in Sai Kung; one while hiking, the other while sailing

Two fatal accidents occurred in Sai Kung yesterday (9/3). The first, to a hiker after a fall on the MacLehose Trail, and the second, a drowning during a sailing competition in Ma Tsai Pai, Sai Kung.

Around 11:15 am, a 36-year-old man fell while hiking with his friends on the fourth section of the MacLehose Trail in Sai Kung. He subsequently became unwell, vomited and fell into coma. He was already unconscious when the ambulance crews arrived at the scene. They immediately sent him to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment. However, he was confirmed dead after attempted resuscitation. The cause of death has yet to be determined after an autopsy.

It is understood that the victim and three friends started from Shui Lang Wo at about 10:00 am and planned to go to Sha Tin along the MacLehose Trail. However, he fell to the ground and fainted on the way. Other hikers passing by saw this and tried to help him. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed, but unfortunately the victim died later when being sent to the hospital.

At around 1:45 pm, emergency services received a report from a fellow crew member of a sailing boat saying that a 62 year old man had fallen into the sea from the boat off Ma Tsai Pai, Sai Kung. The victim was rescued by his companions, but after the officers arrived at the scene, the victim fell unconscious and was taken to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan by helicopter for treatment. He was later confirmed dead.

After preliminary investigation, it is believed that the victim accidentally slipped from the boat and fell into the sea while participating in a sailing competition. The cause of his death has yet to be determined after an autopsy.
