Police arrest driver who sped round Mak Pin roundabout the wrong way, crashed into car, drove away without stopping

An online video has been circulating for the past few days. It shows a car, travelling at high speed, going round the roundabout at Mak Pin, Sai Kung the wrong way. It hits another car and then speeds away without stopping. The incident took place around 11:00 pm on 5 November. The Traffic Department of Kowloon East Region noticed the video. and after investigation, officers arrested a 57-year-old male driver in Ngau Tau Kok District yesterday morning (11/11) on suspicion of “dangerous driving”, “not reporting after an accident” and “not stopping after an accident”. The arrested driver has been released on bail pending investigation and is due to report to police in mid-January.

The dashcam clips circulating on the Internet show that the suspect’s car involved went the wrong way when it entered the roundabout, and then rammed into the rear of another car; the camera of the car that was hit recorded the incident, It was shown that the vehicle involved in the crash immediately drove away from the scene.

Police reiterate that reckless and dangerous driving poses a serious safety risk to pedestrians and other road users. Offenders, upon conviction, are subject to a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment and a fine of $25,000. If it is the first conviction, you can be suspended for at least six months; if re-convicted , you can be suspended for at least two years, and you must take a driving improvement course and record 10 points for illegal driving. The Police will continue to step up law enforcement to crack down on serious traffic violations on the roads to ensure smooth roads and protect the safety of road users.
