Yesterday evening, in the middle of rush hour, a heavy goods vehicle carrying two large construction machines collided with a car at the junction of Hong Kin Road and Hiram’s Highway when it hit the car opposite the Fire Station. Both drivers were injured and sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for treatment.

Around 5:00 pm, a car was driving down the slope of Hong Kin Road. When it reached a traffic light opposite the Sai Kung Fire Station, it stopped on the left line and waited for the signal.

A heavy goods vehicle carrying two heavy-duty construction machines did not stop in time. According to the reports at the scene, the heavy goods vehicle brake system was faulty and was suspected of failing, and the driver lost control and crashed into the car and the roadside railings, and then careened out of control to cross Hiram’s Highway and settled in the hillside.

Personnel of the fire station saw the accident and rushed to the scene for rescue. In the accident, the car driver car reported feeling unwell, while the driver of the truck was frightened. Both of them had to be sent to the hospital for treatment. Police at once sealed off the scene in order to investigate the cause of the accident.

After the accident, the steel safety barrier was damaged on a section of Hong Kin Road opposite the Sai Kung Fire Station, and several road signs were also knocked down. A large amount of broken glass was left on the ground, and the left side of the car was dented.

The Transport Department said that due to the traffic accident, part of the traffic lanes of Hiram’s Highway (in both directions) near the Sai Kung Fire Station has been closed. Motorists could only use the remaining lanes to drive and traffic was delayed for some hours.
