Early yesterday morning (19/8), a car carrying two men and a woman was travelling along Hiram’s Highway towards Sai Kung. The driver lost control as it was approaching the junction with Yau Ma Po Street, hit a road sign, crashed through the railings onto the pavement, and then demolished the front of a ground floor shop in Po Tung Road. The car overturned, and the glass door of the Honeymoon Dessert shop and the menu board outside were also damaged.

Passers-by suspected that someone might be trapped, so they called emergency services. Before the rescuers arrived, the occupants of the car, all injured, climbed out of the car unaided. The 25-year-old male driver suffered a head injury and was bleeding profusely, and his shirt was stained red with blood. The two passengers, a 21-year-old male and 22-year-old female, were conscious and sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

After the accident, parts of the car and the wrecked iron railings were scattered on the pavement and roadway. A crane arrived at the scene and hoisted the car back upright. Officers are investigating the cause of the accident. The injured driver is reported to have told police that he lost control after avoiding a dog. Traffic on the highway was disrupted while the mess was cleaned up.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
