Sai Kung’s most popular musician Frankie dies – updated (2)

Frankie Hollywood — to use his sometime stage name — has died of cancer. He was a lovely man with a good heart who was one of the most popular people in Sai Kung. Frankie Chitembwe was a consummate musician with his singing and instruments who starred at the Tikitiki Bowling Bar for years and latterly at 28 Restaurant on weekends. The 28 held a wake for Frankie on Saturday 5 August.

28 restaurant will hold a second wake for Frankie C tonight Sunday 6 August from 6.15. This musicians wake for their popular colleague at their request because so many could not come last. 28 proprietor Chris Skinner said, “Frankie was a good friend for 25 years and a singing and guitar –playing entertainer. He will dearly missed by everyone lucky enough to have known him.”

Musicians performing tonight at 28s second wake for Frankie will include Jozie and a bunch of her singing friends. Frank’s daughter Aissha will be present.

“It was always a pleasure to be in Frankie’s company,” Roger Medcalf, founder of Hong Kong Buzz and Sai Kung’s Concert for the Animals, said. “He lit up a room with the warmth of his personality and grin. The last time I saw Frankie was a sad time. It was outside 28 Restaurant that I saw him. It was the height of Covid and Frankie was clearly distressed, because he couldn’t get any work as a musician.”

In mourning for Frankie we quote WH Auden’s great poem:

“Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin let the mourners come.

He was my North my South, my East my West
My working week and my Sunday rest
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.”
