AfricArt Gallery Hong Kong, located at 10 Hoi Pong Street, G/F, Sai Kung, will launch a new exhibition, CongoEYEs, on Saturday 2 March 2019 between 6:00 – 9:00 pm. The exhibition will showcase the artworks from two exciting artists namely Aza Mansongi and Jonathan Vatunga, who have recently joined the gallery family. The launch party will give visitors the opportunity to view the artworks up close and personal. You can register for the launch party by email to enquiries@africart.com.hk or calling 2420 1899.
The exhibition will then run from 3 to 31 March, with the gallery open from 2:00 – 6:00 pm (Monday-Friday by appointment), and 11:00 am – 7:00 pm (Saturday and Sunday).
Featured artists and biography:
Aza Mansongi
Congolese-born and Doula (Cameroon)-based artist Aza Mansongi (°1980) make use of painting to explore the dynamics of human relationships. “No one can evolve alone, everyone needs someone else” she says.
If the artist identifies herself closely with the Congolese school of classical, figurative realism, her canvases are characterized by abstract backgrounds.
Moreover, unlike her fellow popular painters, she is less concerned with the daily life and chooses to emphasize the Congolese atmosphere in a dreamy and poetical way. By overlapping highly expressive figures with African traditional masks and modern technology, she addresses connections between past and present. Cheerful and colorful her works are the true celebration of the life itself.
Jonathan Vatunga
Jonathan Vatunga was born in 1996 in Kinshasa (DRC) where he lives and works today. Recently graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, this young Congolese painter quickly made a name for himself. His multilayer artworks composed with paint, glue and engravings mix abstraction and realism.
Through his art, Jonathan often stresses the importance of social interactions in the times of individuality. His subjects are both unique and plural, simple and complex at the same time.
Behind joyful aesthetics created by vibrant compositions and vivid colors, the artists manages to confront us with some difficult matters such as gun violence, conflicts and artworks spoliation. In this way, Jonathan wishes to pay his homage to the victims of violent acts and send a message of hope and awake the conciseness, all in delicacy and poetry.
