Two accidents, one fatal, in Sai Kung waters

Two accidents, one fatal, occurred in Sai Kung waters yesterday (23/8) lunchtime, within a few minutes of each other.

Around 12:00 noon, a man in his mid-seventies and his friends went hiking in Lobster Bay, Sai Kung, when he fell off the cliff and into the sea. His friends were shocked when they saw he had disappeared and called the police for help.

Police and rescuers rushed to the scene and finally found the man on the beach, the police using one of their new water-skis. It is understood that he fallen into the sea and was rescued by a passing boat . He was conscious and had minor injuries. He refused to be sent to the hospital after treatment. Police are investigating the incident.

A few minutes later another 70-year-old man was suspected of drowning about 50 to 100 metres away from Ha Shan Tuk, and was seen floating and sinking in the sea. The victim has taken a tourist boat from Tsim Sha Tsui to Ha Shan Tuk with 24 people on board including the crew. The captain of the boat and the victim’s family immediately rescued him and reported the incident to emergency services. Rescue ships arrived and found the victim unconscious and unresponsive.

He was sent by ambulance to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead a little later. His cause of death is yet to be determined after an autopsy. As for the accident and its cause, further investigation is required.
