A Facebook netizen in Sai Kung recently posted that they had noticed that a golden retriever along the waterfront was tied to a railing on the promenade by its owner and exposed to the sun for at least two hours. They criticised the dog owner’s behaviour for being ignorant and dangerous, and pointed out to the dog owner that exposure to the sun outdoors might cause heat stroke, but the owner did not take it seriously and said that he had prepared drinking water for the dog, so it was OK. However, they found that the water bowl was placed so far away that the dog would not be able to reach it.
“I don’t know about this so-called dog owner!” they posted, saying that when they and their dog passed by the pier to go swimming, they found a golden retriever tied to the railing on the shore outside the door of a restaurant, exposed to the hot sun. About an hour later, when the Facebook poster returned with their dog, they saw that the golden retriever was still tied up in the same position. “I asked nearby patrons, waiters, and passers-by and learned that this dog had been tied up two hours”, and that they worried about the dog’s condition.
The poster brought water for the dog to drink. During this time, they found the dog owner nearby, and kindly reminded them, “It’s hard for him to suffer from heat stroke because of your ignorance.” The owner only said “Don’t worry – there’s water in the bowl.” However, they discovered that the dog water bottle was actually placed on the stone ledge next to the railing, and that because the dog was tied up “it could not drink by itself.”
As soon as the post came out, it attracted attention. Someone recognised the golden retriever in the photo and said that it was tied by its owner to the railing on the shoreline from time to time. He also pointed out that the dog was also seen at the same place at about 3:00 pm that day and was still there at about 5:00 pm. The poster couldn’t help but worry about the dog’s health and appealed to citizens to pay attention. “The dog stays in a hot and sunny place from 8:00 am to dusk. It is conceivable that the dog’s health will be affected. Everyone who owns a dog will definitely think about it, so everyone should pay close attention to the condition of the golden retriever.”
A group of Sai Kung citizens are also worried about the situation of the golden retriever, criticising the dog owner for being irresponsible and even questioned whether this was animal cruelty. Some of the online comments included… “How pitiful! Can you call the police? This is animal cruelty!”, “Why don’t he try it himself? Will the owner stay in the sun for two hours with no water to drink.”
