Heavy rain again hit Sai Kung last night (15/9) after the Hong Kong Observatory posted a red rainstorm warning. Photos uploaded to social media showed the water covering car wheels on major roads. Traffic was blocked in many places with Sai Sha Road and Po Lo Che Road being the worst affected.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a yellow rainstorm warning signal at 7:55 pm last night. Within an hour, it changed to a red rainstorm warning signal at 8:40 pm, and then changed it to a yellow rainstorm warning signal at 10:00 pm. The Observatory stated that it issued a warning at 9:30 pm that Sai Kung, Sha Tin and Tai Po districts had recorded about 70 millimetres of rainfall, and Ma On Shan had more than 100 millimetres.

A bus driver in Ma On Shan reported that Sai Sha Road was flooded by mud and the bus could not pass through it. It was reported that buses bound for Sai Kung needed to make a U-turn here. Some netizens uploaded photos and videos of flooding in Sai Kung to social networks, showing flooding on Sai Kung Highway near Tai Chung Hau Village. Others said that Hiram’s Highway near the Lions Club Nature Education Centre was also flooded.

Landslides and fallen trees blocked Po Lo Che Road and this morning workers cordoned off the road section involved to clear away landslides and fallen trees. Government officials at the scene said that they would carry out shotcrete work later and that only pedestrians could pass by for the time being.
