Decomposed body of 57-year-old man missing for more than 20 days found in the dense forest near Mui Tsz Lam

Ning Kwok-leung

The search for a hiker – 57-year-old Ning Kwok-leung – who went missing in Sai Kung three weeks ago, has possibly ended in tragedy after a body that matches Ning’s description was discovered on Tuesday (12/9).

The 57-year-old left his home on King Fook Street in Wong Tai Sin on the morning of 23 August and told his family he was going for a solo hike on West Buffalo Hill (Wong Niu Shan), located between Sha Tin and Sai Kung.

Emergency services used drones in the search

He was last heard from when he struggled to speak in a call to emergency hotline officers on 26 August, three days after going missing. He told the officers that he was in a poor physical state as he was unable to stand and experiencing dehydration.

Government and private search and rescue teams have been searching for days, and after experiencing Typhoon Signal No. 10 and heavy rains, the missing man once called his family saying he was short of water and unable to stand. Later, someone found gloves suspected to belong to the missing man in Wong Chuk Shan.

FSD teams searched the heavily wooded hillsides

Police, firefighting and government flying service teams arrived at the scene and transported the body down the mountain. Family members were also at the scene to wait for the news.

The search area covered more than 12 square kilometres of mountainous areas between Ho Chung and Ma On Shan..
