Last Thursday morning (26/10) police received a report from a fisherman on a fishing boat that a body was found floating about 500 metres away from Shek O Beach on Hong Kong Island. Marine police and emergency services responded and retrieved the body, which was then sent to the Aberdeen Marine Police Base. After police investigation, it has been initially confirmed that he was a diver who disappeared five days previously off Basalt Island, Sai Kung.

The diving incident occurred last Saturday (21/10), when a 28-year-old man was learning to dive near near Basalt Island in Sai Kung in the afternoon. Around 3:00 pm the instructor and fellow students had not noticed him surfacing, so they reported the situation to emergency services and officers from the Police, Fire Services Department, Government Flying Service and Marine Department conducted a sea and air searches in the waters in the area but could but find any sign of the man.

It is reported that the victim worked in the IT industry and lives in Tseung Kwan O and was taking the diving licence exam at the time of the incident. The water at the site is about 16 metres deep and the weather was cloudy at the time. When the victim dived to a depth of several metres, he signalled to the instructor that he felt unwell and was going to return to the surface, but when the instructor followed he could not find the victim and called the police for help. Emergency services continued looking for the missing man for several days but had no sighting until the fisherman reported the floating body off Shek O.
