Nine illegal immigrants stranded on a Sai Kung island rescued after fishermen hear cries for help

Shue Long Chau

At about 6:00 pm on last night (22/10), the authorities received a report from fishermen, saying that when passing through the Ninepin Islands area in the eastern waters of Hong Kong, they heard a cry from Shue Long Chau. Someone was shouting “HELP” in English so the fishermen alerted the emergency services fearing that someone was in danger. After receiving the report, a Government Flying Service team, Fire Services unit and marine police rushed to the scene to search.

It is reported that rescuers rescued nine men on the island. They all lacked water and food, but were not injured. They were sent by the Marine Police to the Marine Police Base opposite Sai Kung for further investigation.

The nine rescued people were reportedly Pakistani nationals and had difficulty communicating with investigators. Police are investigating the identities of the rescued persons and suspect that they had entered the country illegally, so they arrested all nine together.

Investigations are ongoing into how they landed on the remote islands.
