Clear Water Bay Road taxi catches fire after it loses control at high speed and lands in the road divider; two hospitalised – video link UPDATED

UPDATE: Sadly it is reported the the taxi driver did not recover consciousness and died in hospital this morning.

A taxi accident occurred on Clear Water Bay Road around 7:00 am this morning (22/10). The 78-year-old driver was thrown out of the car and injured his hand. The 34-year-old passenger in the car was also injured. Dashcam footage from another vehicle shows that the taxi was driving along Clear Water Bay Road towards Sai Kung at high speed when it lost control on a curve near Capital Garden, Ta Ku Ling San Village. During the video the taxi is seen crashing into a lamppost, jumping the kerb, rolling over and ending up in the grass road divider, and then catching fire.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and, using smoke hoods, used a hose to put out the fire. The roof of the taxi was burned.

The passenger suffered bruises and was taken to hospital

The taxi driver fell out of the car and suffered a fractured hand. He was unconscious and sent to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for emergency treatment, and was later transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. Pictures online show the male passenger sitting on a kerb waiting for help. He suffered bruises and was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment while conscious.
