Taoist priest sentenced to life in prison for murder of woman in Sai Kung village house, deceased’s mother sentenced to 10 years in prison

In September 2019, Ng Yan-yu a 21-year-old woman with intellectual impairment, was found dead in a village house in Lung Mei, Sai Kung. The jury found the man, Dunsany Cheung Chi-choi, a Chinese medicine practitioner and a Taoist priest, guilty of indecent assault and murder. The deceased’s mother, Ng Ma Yu-kang, was found guilty of aiding and abetting indecent assault. Cheung was sentenced to life imprisonment in the High Court today (18/10), while Ng Ma Yu-kang was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping said that Cheung’s act of inserting a dildo into the deceased’s lower body was extremely cruel and inhumane. It was one of the worst indecent assault cases she had ever seen in her many years as a judge. She sentenced the maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment for the crime of indecent assault. The murder charge carries a life sentence.

Toh pointed out that Ng Ma Yu-kang’s behaviour was more serious than that of Cheungt. As the deceased’s mother, she allowed the deceased to be abused and even participated in evil deeds. She stood by while her daughter was being abused, which was an extreme violation of a mother’s integrity towards her daughter. “I can’t imagine how a mother can treat her own flesh and blood.” “For committing such a cruel act,” the criminal liability is the same as that of the male defendant. She emphasized that courts rarely impose the maximum penalty, but the nature of this case is extremely serious, and the maximum penalty for abetting indecent assault was 10 years’ imprisonment.
