The Marine Police and the Customs were conducting anti-smuggling operations in Sai Kung early yesterday morning (13/2) when they saw a speedboat without navigation lights approaching the Pak Sha Wan Pier in Sai Kung. They saw 10 men moving a batch of goods from the suspicious speedboat to a truck on the shore. The personnel immediately took action and the 10 men immediately jumped onto the speedboat and fled towards Shelter Island at high speed. The Marine Police launched a pursuit, but the speedboat eventually escaped to the Port Shelter area and disappeared.
Officers seized a total of 95 cartons of suspected smuggled cigarettes on the truck and on the shore, with a total market value of approximately $4.38 million and a taxable value of approximately $3.14 million; and seized the truck involved. The case is still under follow-up investigation by customs officers.
