Your well-travelled reporter is just back from a South China Sea trip on a cruise liner. Most of the passengers were elderly and the daily excitement was betting on how many people would croak in the next 24 hours.
So to with the Sai Kung restaurant scene. Many businesses are clearly in death throes. Staff numbers exceed the customers. The red ink is draining the owners until one day, desperate, they have to submit and the shutters go up.
What went wrong? Spending patterns changed. People realised it’s cheaper over the border. Others said Hong Kong is unaffordable, let’s go and they did. We wish the remaining restaurateurs well and hope they will survive.
I’ll have chicken quesadillas and a beer.
