Marine Police and the Customs conducted an anti-smuggling operation in Sai Kung early the morning of 12 March. During the operation they found a speedboat without navigation lights approaching the shore of the West Dam of High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung.

At the same time, several men were moving goods from the speedboat to a truck on the shore. Law enforcement officers immediately took action and the man involved immediately jumped onto a speedboat and fled to the eastern waters at high speed. Marine police officers then launched a pursuit, but the speedboat eventually fled Hong Kong towards the mainland.

Officers seized a total of 181 cartons of suspected smuggled cigarettes on the truck and on the shore, and detained the truck involved. The estimated total market value of the cigarettes was about $8.3 million and the taxable value was about $6.03 million. The case is being followed up and investigated by personnel from relevant departments.
