Brindy Mason, once the scariest teenage girl in Sai Kung, has won her second mixed martial arts fight and now moves on “to the big one, my professional debut”. Brindy, who now lives in Thailand, dominated her latest opponent, a Thai girl who bravely took the punishment. The judges unanimously said Brindy won the Muay Thai fight held in Patong.

Vaughan, Brindy’s father who lives in Nai Chung old village, Sai Kung, said, “She did very well in her first Muay Thai fight. Under Muay Thai rules you can kick, punch and elbow. Brindy did all of this, even spinning before striking and switch-kicking, which is unusual for a first timer.” Muay Thai, sometimes called the Art of Eight Limbs, is full-contact fighting using stand-up striking, sweeps and clinching.
Brindy’s first professional fight will be next month. She said professional fighting is a lot tougher. “Everything is allowed, nothing left out. I can knee in the head. My goal is to get into the big league (MMA fighting in the USA). To do that I have to win all my fights and look good. I’ve got to win by knockout or TKO or submission.”
Brindy, now 20, lives in Thailand where she coaches kids in ju-jitsu at a local gym. She is a world Brazilian ju-jitsu champion, who earned that title winning tournaments in the US. She’s both a Hong Kong and New Zealand ju-jitsu champion.
For a time Brindy worked and coached at Andrew Wong-kee’s Sai Kung gym, now above Poet’s on Yi Chun Street. In ju-jitsu, Brindy specialises in choking her opponents until they submit. In her first MMA fight, she trapped her opponent with an arm bar. The girl had a choice: submit or have your arm broken.
