Truck carrying biodiesel overturns in Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin tunnel causing traffic congestion and damage to the tunnel wall

At 12:51 pm yesterday (27/12), a truck carrying biodiesel overturned and crashed into the right wall of the TKO-Lam Tin Tunnel near the tunnel entrance towards Tseung Kwan O and Sai Kung. The 58-year-old male driver – understood to be an imported worker holding a Hong Kong driving licence – was initially trapped but later climbed out on his own. He suffered a minor eye abrasion and was taken to United Christian Hospital for treatment. Online images show the dump truck overturned on a bend, destroying several sections of the right-side tunnel wall, with debris scattered across the road. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The tunnel company stated that the fire department was initially concerned about an oil leak from the truck and evacuated all vehicles and personnel from the tunnel. After confirmation, an engineering vehicle was arranged to pump out the diesel fuel. Sources at the scene indicated that the truck could only be towed away after all the diesel fuel had been removed.

The Transport Department announced that due to a traffic accident, the only lane near the Administration Building at the Lam Tin Interchange (towards Tseung Kwan O) was closed. Drivers were advised to consider using alternative routes. Traffic at the location was heavily congested for a number of hours.
