During the recent police operation against overcharging and speeding by taxi drivers in Sai Kung Country Park area over the Labour Day holiday long weekend, they arrested a 31-year-old local male driver, who drives a green taxi in the Sai Kung area and often posts videos of himself online while driving dangerously. Officers disguised themselves as tourists and conducted an ambush operation in the Sai Kung Country Park, using unmarked vehicles for evidence collection.
Inspector Pun Chun-ho of the Task Force of the Traffic Enforcement and Control Unit of the East Kowloon Regional Traffic Department reported to the media that the driver weaved in and out of traffic on narrow and busy roads, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour at one point. The journey of approximately 42 kilometres took less than half an hour. Police eventually intercepted the vehicle at the Heung Yuen Wai Border Crossing and arrested the driver on suspicion of “dangerous driving.” The vehicle, which also involved illegal modifications, is currently impounded for inspection. It is understood that the metered fare for the trip was over HK$300, and the speed limit on some sections of the road is 80 kilometres per hour.
It is understood that the arrested driver is a well-known figure in the industry with 74,000 followers on social media, frequently sharing videos of his daily driving. Today, he set off from East Dam and drove to the Ma On Shan Bypass area, reaching speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour at one point. He has been granted bail pending further investigation and is required to report to the police in late May. The taxi involved is suspected of illegal modifications and has been detained for further examination.
