AFCD report record number of visitors to Sai Kung Country Parks

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) intensified patrols, enforcement, and public education at several major tourist attractions across Hong Kong, in accordance with its management plan. In response to unexpectedly high visitor numbers in many areas, the department immediately deployed additional staff to maintain order and utilised technologies such as drones and CCTV to monitor the situation on-site.

Saigon East Dam implements crowd control technology to assist in monitoring and prevent hurdling.

The Sai Kung East Dam area saw approximately 5,700 visitors yesterday, reaching a peak in visitor numbers. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) implemented crowd control measures at the Po Pin Chau viewing platform from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, deploying staff at the trail entrances and the viewing platform itself. To ensure visitor safety, in addition to increasing manpower for enforcement, the department also used drones to monitor and broadcast messages over the platform, reminding visitors not to cross the barriers. Visitors generally cooperated with the instructions, and the situation was orderly.

Three popular campsites now have thousands of tents; order and hygiene are generally satisfactory.

Regarding camping hotspots, the Ham Tin Wan, Sai Wan, and Long Ke Wan campsites within the Sai Kung East Country Park all saw large numbers of visitors. According to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), approximately 1,100 tents were at these three campsites yesterday evening. The department deployed additional personnel for round-the-clock patrols and monitoring, promoting camping etiquette and rules, and enforcing regulations against violations. Despite the large number of campers, the hygiene and order at all campsites remained good from last night to this morning, meeting the department’s expectations.

The number of people at Sharp Island exceeded expectations, prompting the department to issue 300 verbal warnings.

Sai Kung’s Sharp Island attracted approximately 3,000 visitors yesterday, exceeding expectations. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) immediately deployed frontline personnel, conducting joint patrols with the Police Force, Marine Department, and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department to prevent littering and maintain order. In addition, the AFCD, together with the World Wildlife Fund Hong Kong (WWF), promoted “coral-friendly routes” to snorkellers, reminding the public not to touch corals or collect marine life. During the patrols, personnel issued approximately 300 verbal warnings to visitors.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department stated that it will continue to closely monitor the situation at major tourist attractions during the upcoming holiday period, and the relevant management and enforcement measures will remain in place until the end of the Golden Week holiday.
