A 44-year-old woman suffering from paranoia attacked her boyfriend, who is in his sixties, with a hiking stick and a kitchen knife in a village house in Pak Kong, Sai Kung last July, leaving him with three lacerations to the head that required stitches. The woman later surrendered to the police and pleaded guilty to one count of wounding with intent. Sentencing was held today (8/10) at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts (acting as the District Court). The judge stated that the defendant did not premeditate the crime, but the victim’s injuries were serious. Considering the defendant’s mental health issues, he ultimately accepted the report’s recommendation to sentence her to a three-month hospital order.
The case details indicate that the defendant and the victim were a couple at the time of the incident and lived together in the apartment where the incident occurred. At the time of the incident, the victim was using his mobile phone in the living room when he was suddenly attacked on the back of the head. Turning around, he saw the defendant holding a kitchen knife. He asked the defendant to put down the knife, which she did, and she helped him stop the bleeding.
The defendant then claimed to have gone out to buy painkillers but did not return to the apartment. Around 2:00 pm that same day, the defendant surrendered herself to the Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station. Under caution, she stated that due to relationship problems and a moment of impulse, she hit the victim once with a hiking stick and slashed him twice with a kitchen knife.
Seeing his head bleeding and feeling frightened, she wandered the streets before deciding to surrender. The victim was taken to the hospital for examination that same day, where three lacerations ranging from 4 to 7 centimetres in length were found on his head, two of which were deep enough to expose bone and require stitches.
The defendant pleaded guilty to one count of intentional wounding. The charge alleges that on 8 July 2025, at a village house in Pak Kong New Village, Sai Kung, the defendant unlawfully and maliciously wounded a man. The judge cited the defendant’s background and the defence’s mitigation statement, noting that the divorced defendant, who has a daughter, had been unemployed since 2015. She met the victim in Canada, and they had been living together for three years. The case stemmed from an argument over trivial matters, during which the defendant experienced a mental breakdown due to past stress.
The defendant’s psychiatric report stated that she received treatment during her remand and her condition improved, but she still had delusional thoughts. The judge considered a hospital order appropriate for both the defendant and society, and therefore accepted the report’s recommendation, sentencing the defendant to a three-month hospital order.
