The event that is arguably the most fun in Sai Kung is this weekend: Hebe Haven Yacht Club’s 24-hour dinghy challenge with its Race Village full of colourful characters can be expected to attract about 2000 people. Open on Saturday and Sunday free to the public, the festivities benefit many charities.
The club says $11 million has been raised in the past. This year the beneficiaries are Children’s Cancer Fund, Treats, Ideal and Sailability, the yachting for the disabled group that operates at Pak Sha Wan.
If you go — best with the whole family — after noon on Saturday and 10am on Sunday you will find the club and its forecourt heaving. Dinghies will be racing each other on a short course right in front of the club. Food and drink will be on offer at the club’s bars and restaurants. The Race Village, lots of temporary structures on the forecourt by the sea, will be busy with stalls erected by food and drink vendors, charities, NGOs and local businesses and clubs such as Rugby Tots, Ali Oli, Kidnapped, Three Blind Mice, Candy Stand and Fiona’s Face. If you have been living in Sai Kung for any length of time you will find lots of people you know, having a good time. Many disabled people will be there because the HHYC hosts several groups supporting them.
