Volunteers needed for special educational event at the pier on Sunday 6 May – updated, now 27 May

Sai Kung Recycle Day@Piers3
Since the Summer Cruise Season is coming in Sai Kung, the two Carols that organise Sai Kung Recycle Day each month are holding a special education event at the pier area on Sunday 6 May. They want to educate the public about recycling and waste reduction at the beginning of the season. Their usual monthly event near the Wet Market on Saturday 5 May, is still on.
Mr Ma, Chairman of Sai Kung Ferries said, “There are 20,000-30,000 pier users on every weekend”. He supports Sai Kung Recycle @Pier. The cleaning ladies from FEHD contractor are also, saying “There is too much waste after the boat trips. Many items can be recycled”.  Both the boat operators and the cleaning ladies supported the initiative. Baguio (the FEHD outsourcing service provider) will provide recycling bins and logistics.

Now, the two Carols desperately need volunteers for this event, and they hope BUZZ readers can help them. Amongst their shopping list of volunteers are five Event Organisers – one chief coordinator, two communication coordinators (copywriting for both English and Chinese media and Facebook), and two volunteer coordinators.
They also need volunteers for morning and afternoon session – kids and teens are welcome! The morning session is between 8:00 – 10:00 am with a briefing session at 7:45 am, and the afternoon session is between 4:00 – 6:00 pm with a briefing session at 3:45 pm. 12 volunteers are needed for the morning and 10 for the afternoon.

They plan to collect four types of clean recyclables:

  • Aluminium Cans
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Glass Bottles
  • Polyfoam boxes (need to remove tapes from polyfoam boxes)

As Carol Chan says, “If we do not have enough volunteers, we will miss a golden opportunity to promote Zero Waste in the Ocean, Zero Waste on the Beach and education about recycling and waste reduction at the beginning of the peak season”.
