Sai Kung police have issued a video of a 12-year-old schoolgirl being knocked down while crossing Po Tung Road. It is intended as a warning to drivers and pedestrians to be more careful. We see the girl has picked herself up after being hit so we hope she has been just shaken and not badly hurt.
Senior Inspector Jacky Chan said he was patrolling in the area with his boss, Chief Inspector Daniel Tsang, and they responded personally to the accident. “Drivers should be alert and defensive when passing a road crossing, even if a green light or traffic condition allows the driver to pass,” Jacky said. Drivers should “lower their speed and always prepare to react if someone suddenly rushes onto the road”.
“Pedestrians should be fully attentive, observe traffic condition, lights and don’t play cell phone or do anything that is distracting you from observing the road,” the Senior Inspector said.
The pedestrian crossing where Man Nin Street meets Po Tung Road is a black spot and BUZZ has reported on a number of accidents there over the years. An engineer who has been resident in Sai Kung for 30 years said at least 25 such accidents have happened at that crossing. BUZZ recalls one of Daniel’s predecessors saying some years ago an old man had been killed there. He stepped out from behind a vehicle and was hit in the head by a truck’s wing mirror. The former Sai Kung police chief said they had considered traffic lights for the crossing but decided no, because they would be too close to other lights on Po Tung Road near the temple.
