Hong Kong and New Zealand ju-jitsu champion Brindy Mason has fought her first bout in Long Beach, California, yesterday 27 October. Her dad Vaughan said “she came second” in her fight at the World Brazilian Ju-jitsu Championships.
Brindy, who is 14 and lives at Nai Chung Old Village with Vaughan, said that at the end of the four-minute bout her French opponent had “won by just three points, but I almost submitted her.” Brindy will fight two more times today at the world championships. “It’s Gi, that’s what I am good at.”
Brazilian ju-jitsu is full contact fighting without punching or kicking. A student at Wong Kam Fai Secondary School, Brindy has been Hong Kong champion in her age group for two years. Recently she won the New Zealand national title and later found herself, a NZ passport holder, invited to join the NZ national team in Long Beach. “I feel very very honoured.”
Brindy said she has a chance to make the final today.
