The police have taken their anti-burglary campaign to the streets led by a female superintendent. Emily Lam (right in the photo) came from the Kowloon East Police Tactical Unit to add weight to the Sai Kung campaign.

Senior Inspector Jacky Chan, temporarily chief of the Sai Kung police station (his boss Daniel Tsang is working this month at Wong Tai Sin district headquarters) said their attempt to publicise the need for precautionary measures in peak burglary season is code named “Operation Microller”. It consists of distribution of leaflets, souvenirs and burglar alarms as well as patrols in villages and town streets.

Joining in the effort were local politician Chan Kuen-kwan, regional crime prevention office, police dog unit, and the Wong Tai Sin police community relations office.

The police keep hammering the same messages: Lock up, install alarms, dogs can be effective deterrents. If your house is isolated on the edge of the bush, it is more likely to be targeted by thieves. Houses of the wealthy are also more likely to be hit by burglars and should have security systems. Report suspicious people. If you see a bloke who looks like he has been sleeping rough, inform the police.

Jacky told SAI KUNG BUZZ that he has personally attended every burglary scene since being posted to Sai Kung. In most cases thieves had entered in the small hours because homeowners had left windows open. The peak burglary season will last through Chinese New Year.
