Pink Phloyd hits Sai Kung – again!

Pink Floyd tribute band, Pink Phloyd, will be playing in Sai Kung at the Hong Kong Academy on 16 March following their sold out performance last year. All ticket revenue and donations goes to KELY Support Group – a non-governmental bilingual organisation in Hong Kong which aims to provide support to youth between the ages of 14 to 24.

The band will play the entire classic 1975 album “Wish You Were Here” end to end for the first set. The album’s original theme focuses on mental health and the loss of the founding member of Pink Floyd who left due to mental breakdown, correlates with charity. At the half-time interval there will be a brief talk/video by KELY. The second set will be greatest hits off other albums. The show will last two hours  with lights/projections etc vaguely in the theme of a Pink Floyd show.

The band are all ‘enthusiastic amateurs’, with a number of local Sai Kungers. These include Greg on lead guitar, Jim on sax and Nina  on backing vocals.

Others in the band are Joey on lead vocals and 2nd guitar (Sai Ying Pun), Kenny on Keys, 2nd vocal duties and Sound Effects (Tseung Kwan O), MG on Bass & Harmonica (Tung Chung) and Alastair on Drums & Giant Gong (Lamma). Also  involved are  Andy (Sai Kung resident), Head of Technology at HKA as Lighting Director, and Mark (Hong Kong Island) who toured with Pink Floyd as a lighting technician throughout 1989, providing additional lighting input.

The band say they are all enthusiastic middle-aged amateurs who love playing the music of Pink Floyd together in a rehearsal room every week and, even better, love sharing it live with an audience, when they get the opportunity. They try to recreate some of the core audio-visual elements of a live Pink Floyd performance, to give the audience a flavour of (or remind those who went) what their shows were like, particularly back in the late 1970s. This includes not moving around that much on stage, in keeping with Pink Floyd’s general laid back approach and letting the light and sound move people instead!
