The exhibition hall of the Geopark Visitors’ Centre at the Lions Nature Education Centre in Sai Kung reopened last Thursday, 7 February, after a complete renovation.
The new displays include rocks from some of the oldest outcrops in the world – a 3.9 billion years old rock from Acasta Gneiss in Canada, and a 3 billion years old rock from Baijiafen Gneiss in China, and hand-made 3D miniature models of key geological features in Hong Kong.
Visitors can explore the Rock Cycle through “The many adventures of magma”: a fun and light-hearted interactive display, and also view a showcase of culture and historical items of people in Sai Kung, learning about the intangible culture heritages within the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region.
The Geopark Visitor Centre renovation cost about $ 1 million. The opening hours of the renovated Centre are from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm daily, closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of Chinese New Year. The Lions Nature Education Centre is located close to Pak Kong, and can be reached from Hiram’s Highway.
