Over the past week or so there have been a rash of incidents involving illegal immigrants arriving in the Sai Kung area, including another one yesterday morning, 15 July. As BUZZ reported on 4 July, seven South Asians were picked up at Sai Wan Village. On 12 July, police officers intercepted three South Asian IIs at the beach in Clear Water Bay. This bust revealed that the operations were organised by a Triad based smuggling group providing a “one-stop” service to arrange the illegal entry.
Yesterday, ten people were reported to have landed near Sai Wan Village area around 10:00 am by local villagers. They took two taxis along Sai Kung East Dam Road, in the direction of the city.
The IIs changed from the taxis to a red van at Pak Tam Chung and were pursued by two teams of police, who intercepted it at the junction of Tai Mong Tsai Road and Yan Yee Road. They found five South Asians and one Gambian, and a Pakistani driver with a Hong Kong identity card.
Police officers immediately launched an investigation and seized personal belongings, including passports and small amounts of cash but found no offensive weapons. The Pakistani driver was arrested and six people were arrested for illegal immigration. The driver was arrested for assisting or abetting illegal immigration.
Police report that the six people who were arrested were aged from 20 to 40 years old. Most of them had no money. Only a small amount of RMB and Bangladeshi currency were on their persons. All of them arrived in the Mainland first and then boarded a speedboat to Sai Kung. The arrested Pakistani driver is over 40 years old and has been in Hong Kong for nearly 30 years.
