A 39-year-old man from Tseung Kwan O died in a drowning accident off Yung Shue O village late last night. He had been crabbing with some friends when he went missing. The friends called emergency services around 11:00 pm. The sea, which had been around 1 m deep when they started fishing was now getting deeper by the minute; they had not been aware of the tides.
The emergency services rushed to the scene, including search and rescue fire-boats, rescue helicopters and marine police. They eventually found the man, in a coma, some two hours later in 2.5 m of water. The ambulancemen tried resuscitation but to no avail. The victim was certified dead at Prince of Wales Hospital around 2.30 am.
The place where the friends were crabbing is difficult to reach, with steep paths along mountain tracks, therefore the rescue took longer than normal. Reports say that there was a 1 m drop in the seabed near where the body was found, and that the victim may not have known this and fell into it, and as he could not swim, sadly drowned.
This is the sixth similar accident in the past ten years. The were mainly due to the victims being caught in the rising tide.
