Heavier security is promised this year for the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair which attracts more than 50,000 people, according to Celine Lau of organiser Informa Markets. It is not only the jewels, diamonds, gemstones and pearls on show that need protecting, but the organiser fears disruption from protesters as well, Ms Lau said in a press release. There will be special “move-in, move-out” arrangements, she said, without specifying what they were for security reasons.

The show starts on Monday, 16 September in two venues: AsiaWorld-Expo will display exhibitions of diamonds, loose gems and pearls from 16 to 20 September; Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will host finished jewellery, packaging, tools and equipment from 18 to 22 September. Last year 3730 exhibitors from 54 countries took part.
