The District Council (DC) election takes place on 24 November. BUZZ is running stories this week highlighting the candidates standing in the six Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay constituencies, excluding the new towns around Tseung Kwan O. This is the first time that all constituencies have had competitive elections; usually around two or three of the local councillors are elected unopposed.

Last up is Hang Hau West. This constituency is bounded by Tai Po Tsai in the north, Anderson Road in the west, Po Lam Road in the south and most of the rural areas surrounding the Tseung Kwan O new town development in the south west. It has a population of 19,361 with an electorate of 7,200. It has been represented by Yau Yuk-lun since 2007. He is not standing for re-election this time round.

Q05 no 1Candidate No. 1 is Yu Tsun Ning, a 23-year-old community officer. He is standing as a member of a local community groups TKO Shining, and also for the Democratic Coalition for DC Election – an offshoot of the protests for universal suffrage. His bilingual manifesto highlights animal protection, transport, development and the environment, and “Five demand, not one less”.

The second candidate is Yau Ho Lun, a 32-tear-old community officer. He has been drafted in by the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), widely seen as a front for the Chinese Communist Party. He replaces long-serving district councillor Yau Yuk-lun, who was repeatedly elected unopposed. His manifesto is in Chinese only.
