The Government has apparently taken the decision to suspend the recycling of glass because protesters are using bottles to make petrol bombs. Main recycling contractor Baguio Waste Management and Recycling said the Government did not provide details when it ordered the suspension, nor say when it would end.

Glass bottles, mainly for beer, have been increasingly sought after by protesters to make petrol bombs for use in clashes with police as the city entered its sixth month of anti-government unrest. There are reports of some campuses smelling of alcohol as the protesters threw the beer down the drains instead of drinking it!

The two glass recycling contractors account for the 60 tonnes, or 180,000 bottles, recycled each day. Until the suspension is lifted these bottles are being sent to landfill.

Sai Kung’s recycling campaigners, the two Carols, Ho and Biddell, are battling on despite the Government’s suspension of recycling. Carol Biddell told BUZZ, “We are trying to keep the service going in Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay. If your bin is full please let me know (not the Government or they will cancel the service). Whatsapp me on 65318215 with the location please and I will let the contractor know directly.”
